About us

The Collaboration

The Open Product Initiative is a collaborative venture aimed at revolutionizing the way product-related data is shared across the globe. Loughborough University is working with Open Data Manchester and Dsposal to develop the standard in partnership with TechUK and Buyerdock, and investment from the Impact Accelerator Fund.

As we embark on this journey, the OPI invites stakeholders from across the spectrum of ‘produce, procure, consume, re-use, re-purpose, and dispose’ to join us. Your insights, data, and real-world contexts are crucial in steering this work towards meaningful outcomes.

The Need

The need for such a standard has never been more critical. The EU and UK government are increasingly mandating the use of ‘product passports’ to enhance sustainability and traceability. Yet, the current landscape is fragmented, with a multitude of incompatible systems hindering sustainability goals. OPI’s solution? A unified Open-Product™ Data Model that ensures interoperability, meets compliance requirements, and fosters an ecosystem where technology and services can thrive, enhancing the transparency and availability of vital product information.

Beyond compliance, the initiative has the potential to have a profound impact on the entire supply chain, enabling the sharing of a core set of information that spans manufacturers, producers, and consumers. This will not only aid in the traceability of critical materials but also in the transition towards a truly circular economy.

But this is just the beginning. The OPI also envisions an Open-Product™ Information Ecosystem — a vibrant marketplace for data-driven services that can integrate with existing Digital Product Passport solutions, or re-sale platforms like Amazon marketplace and eBay, making it easier for consumers to resell and reuse items.
